Siendo fotógrafo se puede experimentar todo tipo de situaciones a la hora de ir a trabajar como: frío extremo, calor insoportable, modelos que no tienen ni idea de lo que hacen y todo tipo de circunstancias imaginables. Todos estos contratiempos parecen perder importancia cuando se encuentran trabajos como el de Zena Holloway quién además de ser fotógrafa y tener que enfrentarse y resolver todas estos imprevistos y dificultades, debe hacerlo BAJO EL AGUA!
Zena se ha sentido a gusto en el agua desde que empezó a bucear, y aprendió todo lo que este medio tenía para enseñarle durante los dos años que fue instructora de buceo. La parte de la fotografía la aprendió sola, leyendo y estudiando por su cuenta, y una vez tuvo eso resuelto nada tuvo más sentido que reunir sus dos pasiones en un hermoso resultado sus fotografías subacuáticas.

Las imágenes de Zena Holloway no sólo son exquisitas por sus vivos colores o porque son hechas bajo el agua, sino porque además reflejan una capacidad inaudita para dirigir a sus modelos (aún sin poder hablarles) y un conocimiento absoluto del agua y de la forma en que la luz y el cuerpo humano interactúan con ella.
Creo que esto queda mucho más claro leyendo sus propias palabras: «Me gusta pensar que uso el agua para crear imágenes únicas e interesantes. Pienso que a veces el agua actúa como una barrera física y mental para muchas personas; las personas que trabajamos en el agua disfrutamos de la libertad de la ausencia de peso y del desafío que representa un nuevo ambiente. Por otro lado, es común que las personas que no trabajan en el agua se asombren ante lo que se puede conseguir. Entender cómo funciona el cuerpo en el agua es un aspecto muy importante para lo que hago, y pienso que mi entrenamiento como instructora de buceo fue el mejor entrenamiento que pude tener para llegar a manejar modelos y celebridades nerviosas bajo el agua.»

As a photographer you can find yourself experiencing all kinds of circumstances on your day to day work, like dealing with extreme cold, or unbearable heat, or models who don’t have a clue, well, basically anything can happen. But all of this seems pretty insignificant when you come accross images like Zena Holloways’, who, besides being a photographer and having to deal with this kind of problems on a day to day basis, has to do it UNDER WATER!
Zena has felt at home underwater since she started diving and she learned all there was to know about water during the years she worked as a diving instructor and an underwater videographer. The photography part came later, she’s a self taught photographer who learned all about the trade by investigating by herself, and when the tame came to take pictures it made perfect sense that she did it where she spent most of her time: under water.

Zena’s images are exquisite, not only because of their gorgeous use of color and of their being shot underwater, but also because they show an astounding ability for firecting models (even if she can’t speak to them) and an absolute knowledge of water and of the way light and the human body interact with it. I think she makes this point much clearer than I do when she says: «I like to think that I use water to create unique and interesting imagery. I find the water acts like a physical and mental boundary for a lot of people. Those that can work in water enjoy the freedom of weightlessness and the challenge of a new environment and those that can’t are often in complete awe at what can be achieved. Understanding how to manage people in water is a large part of what I do and I think my background as a diving instructor has been the best training I could have had to prepare for working with nervous models and celebrities. «
