Hay muchas formas de recaudar fondos para buenas causas pero lo que está haciendo la diseñadora Sheena Matheiken, es definitivamente excepcional, a partir de mayo de este año  va a utilizar un sólo vestido todos los días durante un año cambiándolo sólo por medio de accesorias, capas de ropa y modificaciones hechas a mano para demostrar las posibilidades de la moda sostenible y de la reutilización de la ropa. La idea es crear conciencia y recaudar fondos para la Fundación Ankanksha que trabaja con niños de la calle de la India.

There are loads of ways to raise funds for good causes, but what designer Sheena Matheiken is doing is definately exceptional, starting May 2009, she’s going to use the same dress every day for a year which she  will reinvent with layers, accessories and all kinds of accouterments, the majority of which will be vintage, hand-made, or hand-me-down goodies.  The idea is to create consciousness about sustainable fashion and to raise funds for the Ankanksha Foundation which works with slum children in India.

A pesar de que para nosotros los latinos el libro de niños escrito e ilustrado por Maurice Sendak «Where the wild things are» (algo así como «Donde viven las cosas salvajes») no es tan conocido, tengo que decir que no veo la hora de que salga la película porque con sólo ver el trailer quedé cautivada por la luz, los efectos y los personajes de esta historia que es recreada por el genial Spike Jonze; se ve tal cual como me lo imaginaba cuando era chiquita y mi mamá me leía el libro.

Even though for us latin americans Maurice Sendak’s book «Where the wild things are» is not that familiar, I have to say that I’m really really looking forward to the movie because just watching the trailer brought tears to my eyes and I was captivated by the amazing light, the effects and the characters of this wonderful story that is recreated in the big screen by the very talented Spike Jonze; it looks just like I imagined it when I was little and my mother read the book for me.

Escribir sobre cosas que me gustan siempre es fácil y divertido, pero cuando se trata de una persona que no sólo quiero montones, sino que además admiro aún más de lo que la quiero creo que me puedo parcializar un poco y deshacerme en elogios y palabras bonitas. Por eso en este post mi impronta será mínima, voy a dejar que ustedes miren el trabajo de Cristina, lean cómo ella lo explica y define, y decidan si, cómo yo, la quieren con loca pasión:

«Me obsesiona el color, me obsesiona lo que me pasa en el estomago cuando siento que un tono necesita un tris mas de amarillo o unas gotitas de negro….. es algo que aprendí trabajando con moda, porque la escuela de gráfico nunca me lo enseñó. Es la sutileza, la intuicion en su maxima expresion,  la personalidad que le aporta una gama u otra. Totalmente intuitivo y poco racional.
Amo la tipografía, es mi mejor aliada, la que me ayuda a diferenciar un proyecto en su totalidad y le dedico un altísimo porcentaje de mi tiempo, (de 2 a 3 horas por proyecto) solo a escoger el type ideal.
Mi reto diaro es aportar la textura, tacto, tridimensionalidad y sensibilidad a los impresos, algo tan propio de las telas. Amo los textiles por se convierten en gráficas que puedo tocar y sentir y trato de hacer lo mismo con el papel aportándole acabados terminaciones etc….. AMO TOCAR y sentir algo.

Y como estudio básicamente lo que pretendo es ser un instrumento para todo el que tenga la necesidad de comunicar algo. Por dificil que me resulte, amo tener que ser recargada ochentera un dia, otros la mas minimalista y formal, otros estudiar el constructivismo ruso, otros los empaques vintage de los 20….. todo este viaje sólo para hacer el sueño de mi cliente realidad, creo que eso es lo que diferencia a Wallnut Studio: mi capacidad de escuchar, y entender el universo del otro por un ratito. No me interesa imponer mi estética sobre todos pues de ser asi quedarian igualitos, y todos serian blanco negro gris y color piel jejejeje.»

It’s always fun and easy to write about stuff that I like, but when it comes to writing about a person who not only I love soooo much but I also admire her more than I can say, I think I can be a bit partial and write longs paragraphs of compliments and beautiful words. That’s why in this post my imprint will be minimal, I’m just going to let you look at Cristina’s work and read how she explains and defines it, and decide if, like me, you love her passionately:

«I’m obsessed by color, I’m obsessed by the thing that happens in my stomach when I feel that a tone needs a bit more yellow or a few drops of black…This is something that I learned working in fashion, graphic school never taught me that. I’m talking about the subtleness, intuition in it’s purest form, the personality that each color range brings with it. Totally intuitive and unrational.
I love type, it’s my best ally, the one that helps me differentiate between projects and I dedicate a large amount of time (2 -3 hours per project) to choosing the ideal type.
My daily challenge is to bring texture, tact, tridimensionality and sensibility to print, something so usually natural to fabrics. I love fabrics because they turn into graphic pieces that I can touch and feel, and I try to accomplish this with paper as well by adding finishings, textures, etc… I LOVE TO TOUCH and feel something.

As a Studio, what Wallnut is basically about is being an instrument for anyone who feels the need to communicate something. As hard as it may be, I love having to be 80´s overelaborate one day, formal and minimalist on the next day, study russian constructivism on the next day, and vintage 1920’s packages on the next day… all this journey only to make my client’s dream come true. I think that’s what sets Wallnut Studio appart: my ability to really listen, to understand the client’s universe for a little while. I’m really not that interested in labeling everybody with my aesthethic preferences because then they would all look alike, pretty much black, white and skin tone. hahahahaha»

Soy fan enfurecida de Harry Potter y como soy una verdadera nerd y tengo la fastidiosa costumbre de corregir a las personas, mis hermanos me dicen Hermione….pero ya quisiera yo parecerme a Hermione. Emma Watson ha cambiado desde que la vimos con su pelo erizado en la primera película, ha sido la portada de una gran cantidad de prestigiosas revistas de moda, se ha convertido en una fashionista y, hay que decirlo, es muy merecido porque es absolutamente hermosa! Cómo no enamorarse de ella???

I’m a HUGE Harry Potter fan and since I’m an absolute nerd and happen to have the annoying habit of correcting people, my brothers often call me Hermione….I wish I looked like Hermione all right! Emma Waston has changed a lot since we first saw her with her frizzy hair in Harry Potter’s first film, she has been the cover of many prestigious fashion magazines, she has turned into a fashionista, and, it has to be said, it’s all very deserved since she is absolutely gorgeous! Gotta love Emma!

Creo que todos hemos hecho ruido con cajitas de Tic Tac alguna vez en la vida, pero este chico de Uzbekistán lo lleva a otro nivel!!! :D Y el «Micha Game» es muuuuy divertido!

I think we’ve all made noise out of Tic Tac packs, but this guy from Uzbekistan really takes it to another level! FUN! :D And the «Micha Game» is sooo much fun!

Que felicidad!!! salieron las primeras imágenes de Alicia en el País de las Maravillas según Tim Burton!!!! llevo mucho timepo esperando esta peli y ver ya pruebas visuales de que si existe me pone muy muy feliz! Johnny Depp es el sombrerero loco, Helena Bonham Carter la reina de corazones y Anne Hathaway parece una diosa blanca en el papel de la reina blanca. Tengo muchas ganas de ver a Alan Rickman en el papel de la oruga!!!
Yo no se ustedes pero yo no veo la hora!! :D

YAY!!!! the first pictures of Tim Burton’s «Alice’s adventures in Wonderland» are out and about!!!! I’ve been expecting this movie for a looooong time and seeing some actual visual proof that it does exist makes EXTREMELY HAPPY. Johnny Depp is the mad hatter, Helena Bonham Carter is the queen of hearts and Anne Hathaway looks like a brilliant goddess in her white queen rol. Really looking forward to seeing Alan Rickman as the carterpillar!!
I don’t know about you guys but I can hardly wait!!! :D

La muy talentosa y muy admirada Catalina Estrada hizo un mini web tour de su exposición «Desarmando Sueños» en la Galería Iguapop de Barcelona, la expo habla sobre los niños víctimas del conflicto armado de Colombia. Y parte de lo recogido con las ventas será donado a una organización que trabaja con estos niños.
Para los que estamos lejos y somos seguidores de esta ilustradora colombiana es un sueño hecho realidad ver sus creaciones al ritmo de la dulce música de otro talento colombiano: The sound of Lucrecia.

The very talented and very admired Catalina Estrada posted a mini web tour of her latest exhibition «Desarmando Sueños» (Disarming Dreams) at Iguapop Gallery in Barcelona, the expo deals with the subject of colombian children victims of  our country’s armed conflict, and part of the money raised from the sales will be donated to a non profit organization that works with these children.
For those of us who are far away from Barcelona and are big fans of this colombian illustrator, it’s a dream come true to be able to see her creations joined by the sweet music of The sound of Lucrecia another colombian talent.
