Siempre he pensado que me hice fotógrafa porque no se dibujar, fue una salida fácil a un problema genéticamente imposible de resolver porque a pesar de que mi papá es arquitecto y uno de  mis hermanos artista plástico, parece que no heredé ninguna de sus cualidades dibujísticas…Por esta razón siempre me he maravillado ante las personas que dibujan, y que dibujan bien, el tipo de personajes que se sientan en un café con una servilleta de papel y se ponen a «hacer garabatos» o lo que ellos consideran garabatos que terminan siendo algo que yo ni con un stencil podría hacer!!! (me pasa con varios amigos, mi hermano, mi esposo….en fin)

A Merrilee Liddiard la conocí porque JF (mi esposo) encontró en algunas de sus errantes expediciones bloguisticas, una fiesta que hizo ella para su hijo en su cumpleaños número 3, la fiesta tenía como tema Peter Pan (otro de mis libros favoritos, pasé muchos años con miedo a decir «no creo en las hadas», en realidad todavía me da miedo..rápido! aplaudan!) y fue amor a primera vista, sólo por esta fiesta y por la forma en que la encaró, quedé enganchada, y el enganche aumentó aún más cuando vi sus ilustraciones.

Mer es ilustradora de portadas para libros de jóvenes adultos desde hace 6 años y tiene un par de ilustraciones de libros de niños: «Princess Peepers» y «Billy and Milly, Short and Silly». Además tiene una deliciosa tiendita en Etsy en dónde vende ilustraciones customizadas para parejas, entre muchas otras cosas bonitas, y tengo que decir que estas son mis favoritas, hay algo que hace que me quede mirándolas, no se si son las finas líneas de los contornos, los sutiles colores, las mejillas rosadas acompañandas de una nariz diminuta generalmente con tonos rosados también,  los ojos grandes con cejas definidas, o el pelo que cae como si fuera compacto y que me hace pensar en un personaje de El Manantial de Ayn Rand, así me imagino a Dominique Francon, pura elegancia y líneas finas.

Espero que les guste tanto el trabajo de Mer como a mí, me declaro fan, no sólo de sus ilustraciones, sino de sus brillantes ideas, de sus increíbles hallazgos en internet,  de su forma de ser mamá, en fin…fan.

I’ve always thought that I became a photographer because I can’t draw, it was an easy way out for a problem that’s genetically impossible to solve, because even though my dad is an architect, and one of my brothers is an artist, I seem to have inherited none of their «drawistic» abilities whatsoever…For this particular reason I have always admired people who draw, and who draw well, the kind of people that sit in a cafe with a paper knapking and start «scribbling» or what they consider to be scribbling that turns out to be something that I couldn’t dream of doing even with the aid of a stencil!!! (this happens to me constantly with friends, my husband, my brother…..)

I found Merrilee Liddiard because JF (my husband) in one of his neverending, every-possible-thing-finding blog expeditions, found that she made a birthday party for her 3 year old son based on Peter Pan (another favorite book, I was scared of saying «I don’t believe in fairies» for years…actually I still am…. quick! clap clap) and it was love at first sight for me, I was hooked (accurate choice of words), just because of the way she thought and saw through this party, but I was even more hooked when I saw her illustrations.

Mer has been a book cover illustrator for 6 years, doing mostly young adults books and two children’s books: «Princess Peepers» and «Billy and Milly, Short and Silly». She also has a very delicious Etsy shop in which she sells, among other beautiful things, customized couples illustrations, and I have to say these are my favorites, there’s something in her line of work that just makes me stare at it for a looooong time. Maybe it’s fine lines of the outlines, the subtle coloring, the pink cheeks that come with the trade mark pinkish nose and forehead, the big eyes with traced eyebrows, or the hair the falls like a compact unit and that makes me think of a character in Ayn Rand’s The Fountainhead, Dominique Francon, sheer elegance and fine lines.

I hope you guys like Mer’s work as much as I do, I proclaim myself a fan, not just of her illustrations, but also of her brilliant ideas, of her incredible internet findings and inspiration, of her parenting…just…a fan.
