Como les había contado, con este primer año de Picnic se vienen cosas nuevas, y aquí están!!!

Dulce, es la primera palabra que se viene a la cabeza cuando se mira el trabajo fotográfico de Jen Gotch, o cuándo se da una hojeada a su original Página Web!
Sus «Tiras fotográficas» forman unas composiciones perfectas por las que la mirada va paseando y sorprendiéndose constantemente en el camino de cómo algo tan aparentemente sencillo no se le ocurre a todo el mundo. Precisamente, eso es lo bonito de estas imágenes, la forma que tienen de hacer evidente la belleza de las cosas cotidianas, de resaltar con esa gama de colores blancos y cremas lo increíble de las pequeñas cosas, un juego de cubiertos, un mantel, un vestido colgado en una ventana…
Si se sigue el recorrido del planeta Jen Gotch, se encuentran además dos series que son conmovedoras y hermosamente logradas, una de autoretratos intervenidos con rayones de lapicero en puntos claves que son a la vez desconcertantes y bonitos y que hacen que el observador se detenga y trate de analizar el motivo de la intervención. Y otra serie de objetos en polaroids acompañados de unos increíbles textos que guían el pensamiento hasta llevarlo a uno a un entendimiento total del estado de ánimo de la fotógrafa a la hora de elegir ese objeto o esa circunstancia para registrarla en la foto.
Creo que no hay mucho que yo pueda decir que no pueda leerse en su impecable y transparente trabajo, o que ella misma no pueda contar en sus propias palabras:
“Vivo en los angeles. El clima frío hace que me duelan los dedos de los piés
Me gustan los conejitos, los gatitos, y los zombies también,
Bailo Tap todos los martes,

Sweetness, is the first word that comes to mind when you look at Jen Gotch’s photographic work. Or at her webpage for that matter!
Her «Photo Strips» make perfect compositions through which the viewer’s glance travels smoothly and constantly amazes itself of how something so seemingly simple can’t be achieved by everyone else in such a beautiful way. And there lies the magic of these images, in the way they make the beauty in the mundane so nakedly evident , in the way they stress the incredible in the small things, all perfectly achieved in a soft and creamy color palette.
If you continue your tour throug Jen Gotch Land, you will also find two series that are both touching and gorgeously achieved: One of selfportraits with pen scrawls in very specific and key spots that are beautiful and disconcerting at the same time and that make the viewer stop and try to figure out why the photo was scrawled in the first place. And another one of objects and situations that are coupled with simple and stunning short texts that have the power of leading the mind of the beholder to a total understanding of the photographer’s state of mind in the moment she was taking each picture.
I guess there’s nothing left for me to say that cannot be read in her impecable line of work, or in her very own words:
«I live in Los Angeles. Cold weather makes my toes hurt,
I like bunnies and kittens, but zombies are cool too.

Desde que estaba chiquita, uno de mis libros favoritos es Alicia en el país de las Maravillas de Lewis Carroll, siempre (aún después de crecer) quise saber cómo sería pasar a través del espejo o caer por la madriguera del conejo blanco.
Después de muchos años, descubrí que hay una persona que tiene un pasaporte con visa múltiple para entrar a este maravilloso mundo. Las imágenes de I.Anton me remitieron desde la primera vez que las ví, a los jardines de flores, los personajes coloridos, y los escenarios surreales del libro de Carroll. Porque cuando uno le da una mirada a su trabajo no puede creer que situaciones, lugares y personajes tan hermosos pertenezcan a el mundo que vemos y vivimos en la vida diaria.
Y eso no es lo único que tienen en común Alicia en el país de las maravillas y I. Anton, en sus propias palabras: «Si tuviera que describir lo que hago, diría que no tiene reglas, no tiene estructura, ni disciplina. No sigo ningún tipo de lineamientos, trato de pensar por fuera de lo común, o a veces, de no pensar . Sólo usar mi imaginación. Mi inspiración principal son las cosas que NO veo a mi alrededor, lo que está en mi cabeza, lo que me gustaría ver, oir, decir, sentir.» Creo que si se le preguntara a Carroll en qué estaba pensando o cuál fue su inspiración a la hora de escribir las historias, contestaría algo muy parecido.
Entonces, sean ustedes bienvenidos al mundo mental de I. Anton, dejénse provocar por sus colores cremosos, sus texturas irreales, sus personajes sin rostro y sus luces suaves que difuminan los contornos de la realidad.

Ever since I was a little girl one of my favorite books has been Lewis Carroll’s : «Alice’s adventures in wonderland», it has remained a favorite even as a grown up and one of the reasons is that I always like to imagine what it would be like to fall down the rabbit hole or pass through the looking glass.
After a lot of years I discovered that there’s a person who holds a passport with a multiple access visa for this wonderful world. I. Anton’s pictures are an inmediate reference of Lewis Carroll’s colorfull characters, of his living flowers in the garden and of his surreal sceneries. Because once you take a look at her work, you can’t believe that such beautiful situations, places and characters belong to the real world we see and live in every day.
And that’s not the only thing this brilliant lady and «Alice’s adventures in wonderland» have in common, When asked how she describes her work, and what her inspiration is, she answered: «If I had to describe what I do, I’d say it is unruly, unstructured, undisciplined. I don’t follow any rules, I try to think outside the box, sometimes not even think at all… use my imagination. My main inspiration comes from what I don’t see around me, from what is in my head, from what I would like to see, hear, say, feel …» I think if Carroll was asked the same question, his answer would be pretty similar.
So, Welcome readers to the world that lies inside I. Anton’s head, relish on her creamy colors, her surreal textures, her faceless characters and her soft lights that make the outlines of reality fade.

¿Cuántas personas en el mundo pueden permitirse el lujo de acreditarse un verbo? creo que no muchas, y CAMO es una de ellas…Además no sólo se inventó el verbo «camografiar» sinó que además se inventó un sustantivo: Camografía.
No es muy complicado distinguir una Camografía, generalmente se trata de imágenes levemente sobreexpuestas, de personas o lugares hermosos (o que se vuelven hermosos al hacerse parte de la Camografía), con algún concepto muy bien plantado por detrás, y con un no se qué que lo transporta a uno a un mundo en donde todo es más luminoso, y las personas viven en un eterno viaje de diversión, como el que alguna vez hizo Jack Kerouac con su infame compañero Neil Cassady, mientras en el fondo suena «Road to nowhere» de Talking Heads.
Lo cierto es que todas estas fotos están indeleblemente marcadas por la forma de ser y de pensar de su autor, todas tienen ese sello indiscutible que las hace Camografías y me gustaría ver a algún ratón de biblioteca de la Real Academia de la Lengua tratando de argumentar que Camografía no es una palabra…¿puede dudarse después de ver una evidencia visual tan contundentemente hermosa?
CAMO dice que sus fotos son: «...fenómenos etnográficos y cotidianos, son moda y estilo de vida, son amigos y modelos, son intimidad universalizada. Son belleza y anarquía» y precisamente eso es lo que las hace tan increíbles: hay cabida para todo aquí: cotidiano, amigos, modelos, etc. y de algún forma que sólo él conoce, todo se ve tan bien…lo elementos parecen fundires de alguna manera extraña para formar composiciiones armónicas que simplemente…funcionan.

How many people in the world can say that the invented a verb? I guess not a lot, and CAMO happens to be one of them…besides, not only did he invent the verb «To Camograph», he also invented a subject: Camography
It’s not that complicated to distinguish a Camography, it’s generally an image slightly overexposed, of beautiful people or places (or is it that they become beautiful when he shoots them?), with some kick ass concept behind it, and with something that kind of takes you to a world where everything seems to be brighter and people live in an eternal trip like the one made and documented by Jack Kerouac and his infamous friend Neil Cassady while in the background you can hear «Road to nowhere» by Talking Heads playing.
The truth is that all of these images are unmistakably marked by their author’s personality and lifestyle, they all share that indisputably brand that makes them Camographies. And I would like to see some bookworm trying to argue that Camography is not a word…Can it be doubted after seeing an evidence so categorically beautiful?
CAMO says that his pictures are: «..etnographic and mundane phenomenons, they are fashion and style, they are friends and models, they are universalized intimacy. They are beauty and anarchy» and that is precisely what makes them so unbelievable: the fact that there’s room for everything: mundane, friends, models, etc. And in a way that only CAMO knows, everything looks so good, the subjects just seem to blend themselves together in some weird armonic compositions…they just…work.

Hacer retratos es una de las partes más difíciles pero al mismo tiempo más interesantes y más divertidas de ser fotógrafo. Las cosas se llevan a otro nivel cuando los retratados son músicos. Los músicos quieren verse cool, quieren proyectar una imagen y el fotógrafo los quiere capturar desprevenidos, plasmar un poquito de su esencia como persona, del alma detrás de la música.
Pocos fotógrafos consiguen que las dos partes de esta dinámica queden satisfechas y Lula Bauer es una de ellas. Conocí su trabajo a través de una muy buena amiga de Argentina que si pudiera sería groupie de profesión, y desde entonces empecé a seguir su flickr, no sólo para ver las hermosas imágenes de los músicos y de las bandas argentinas, sino también para conocer música nueva y lograr ponerle una cara a algunos que ya había oído.
Tenemos varias cosas en común, Lula y yo, tal vez por eso es que la siento cerquita (y porque es una persona con una buena onda que uno no se la cree): Las dos empezamos a tomar fotos porque descubrimos que definitivamente no sabíamos dibujar,las dos seguimos enganchadas en la fotografía analógica (Lula dice que si fuera millonaria haría todo en película), las dos nos preguntamos cómo hacer para vivir de lo que nos gusta hacer y las dos queremos formar un sindicato de FreeLancers!
Pero ya quisiera yo hacer retratos como los de Lula, ya quisiera saber sacar tanto partido de un fondo blanco, o de la poca luz que hay disponible en los conciertos; ya quisiera yo tener la oportunidad de conocer a los personajes que ella fotografía, o que Liniers vaya a una exposición mía y dibuje una tira sobre eso, y ya quisiera yo que a pesar de todo ésto, siguiera siendo una persona increíble con un corazón de oro y buena onda para regalar!
Entonces disfruten dela música a través de los ojos de Lula: un poco de Rock and Roll, un poco de Richard Avedon, un poco de Annie Leibowitz y mucho corazón.

Portrait making is one of the hardest parts of being a photographer, but it’s also one of the most interesting and fun parts. Specially if the ones in front of the lens are musicians because they always want to look kind of cool, or they want to convey a certain image and the photographer is always trying to catch them off guard, trying to capture a bit of the essence of THE PERSON, the soul behind the music.
Few photographers manage to achieve that both parts of the process are equally satisfied, and Lula Bauer happens to be one of them. I found her work through a very good friend from Argentina who would be a groupie for a living if it was possible, and ever since I’ve been following Lula’s flickr, not only to see the gorgeous images, but also to get to know the faces behind the music, or the music and the faces of people I’ve never heard of.
Lula and I have a lot of things in common, maybe that’s why I feel close to her (or maybe it’s because she’s an amazing person with a beautiful soul): We both started taking pictures because we discovered that we definitely couldn’t draw, both of us are still hooked on analogic photography (Lula claims that if she were a millionaire, she would shoot all her work on film), both of us are looking for a way to make a living out of what we like and both of us want to form a FreeLancers Union! I wish I could do a lot of things like Ms Bauer though, I wish I could acomplish so much out of a white background, or out of the darkness of a concert, I wish I could have the chance to meet the characters that she photographs, or that Liniers came to my show and drew a comic about it, I also wish that despite all of this I still were an incredible person with a golden heart and an open disposition to make new friends.
So enjoy the music through Lula’s eyes: a bit of Rock and Roll, a bit of Richard Avedon, a bit of Annie Leibowitz and a lot of heart.

No hay que ser un crítico de arte para apreciar las ilustraciones de Leo Espinosa, ni hay que ser muy perceptivo para darse cuenta de que es una persona increíble cuando se lo conoce personalmente. Lo que si hay que ser es afortunado para tener una oportunidad como la que tuve yo en Boston hace un par de meses y me considero definitivamente muy afortunada de haber podido conocer la ciudad con un guia de este calibre. Porque cuando se conoce a Leo se entiende mejor su trabajo, se entiende que por debajo de los conejitos y animalejos semi roedores, hay un alma hermosa, un constante gozo de cada cosa chiquita que trae la vida cotidiana, una sensibilidad abrumadora y uno de los corazones mejor puestos que he tenido la oportunidad de conocer.
Conozco a alguien que siempre dice «cuando yo sea niño quiero ser como Leo» y creo que nada puede definir mejor lo que despierta su trabajo en el espectador: es simplemente como ser chiquito…tan….facil…tan facil de gozar, tan facil de hacer reir, tan facil de sentir calorcito en el alma cuando se lo mira, tan facil de decir WOW!. Y creo que es inclusive más facil entenderlo cuando se lee lo que él mismo escribió cuando le dije que me mandara algo sobre sus ilustraciones y recibí esta perlita:
«Dibujar: Una ventana para ver mi alma de cerca.
Escribir: Una puerta.
Diseñar: Lo que hago cuando estoy suficientemente feliz con la ventana cerrada.
Soñar: Mi vida.
Reir: El oxígeno.
Satisfacer: Empezar de cero cada día.
Llorar: Reir al revés.
Llevo dibujando desde Ultraman y El Zorro, diseñando menos tiempo del que vengo riendo o llorando. Riendo o llorando en Bogotá, Nueva York, Barcelona y Boston. Llevo soñando la vida entera y el sueño es poder seguir dibujando por el resto de la misma. Me inspira el amor. El amor y el punk rock. El amor y las bicicletas. El amor y el cine. El amor y los cómics.
Quiero permanecer insatisfecho en la continua busqueda de mi voz como artista para poder convertirme algún día en artista.»
Aqui les queda entonces un pedacito de la vida de Leo que seguramente los va a hacer sonreir tantas veces como a mí.

You don’t have to be an art critic to appreciate Leo Espinosa’s illustrations, or a very perceptive person to notice the amazing guy he is when you meet him face to face.
What you have to be is lucky, like I was a couple of months ago when I got the chance to meet him in Boston and was toured around the city by this very atypical and interesting guide. The thing about meeting Leo is that you get to understand his work in a different level, you get to understand that behind the bunnies and weird rodent like creatures there’s a beautiful soul, a constant enjoyment of every single tiny thing that the ordinary life brings, an overwhelming sensibility and one of the best hearts I’ve had the chance to come across.
I know someone who says «when I’m a kid, I wish I could be like Leo», and I think that no phrase coul define in a better way what a viewer feels while looking at his work: it’s just so.. like being a kid…so easy….so easy to enjoy, so easy to make you laugh, so easy to make you feel a kind of warmth in your soul, so easy to make you go WOW! and it’s even easier to understand it when you get to read what he wrote about himself and his work:
«To draw: A window to take a closer look at my soul.
To write: A door.
To design: What I do when I’m happy enough with a closed window.
To dream: My life.
To laugh: Oxygen.
To satisfy: To start each day from scratch.
To cry: To laugh backwards.
I’ve been drawing since Ultraman and Zorro, I’ve been designing for a shorter time than I’ve been laughing or crying. Laughing or crying in Bogotá, New York, Barcelona and Boston.
