Si alguna vez alguien quisiera saber cómo se vería ser niño o pasarla bien representado en fotografía, lo único que tendría que hacer es conocer el trabajo de este genial fotógrafo alemán.

Von Holleben empezó como fotógrafo siguiendo los pasos de su papá a los 13 años de edad, y debido a su formación como profesor y a la influencia de su mamá que es terapeuta infantil, se dedicó a retratar y capturar historias de niños y el concepto del juego, objetivo que consigue impecablemente con dos de sus series que son mis favoritas:

La primera que se llama «Dreams of flying» (Sueños de volar), y es una serie de imágenes que nunca dejan de sorprenderme, por más que las mire miles de veces, siempre encuentro algún detalle nuevo, alguna inteligentísima idea como representar flores con havaianas, alas de hadas con aletas, edificios con canecas de basura, planetas con pelotas, pirámides con libros abiertos, etc. Y es que precisamente ese es parte del atractivo de estas imágenes, que sean tan tan geniales, de una forma tan tan simple, todas hechas con objetos caseros, sin muchas pretensiones y jugando con el horizonte e increíblemente, logrando un efecto tan contundente, tan estético, pero sobre todo: tan divertido!

La segunda serie sobre niños se titula «I am the strongest» (Soy el más fuerte) y son retratos que muestran a niños siendo «el más»….algo: el más rico (en golosinas), el más ruidoso (quebrando una copa con su voz), el más fuerte, el más hambriento, etc.. en esta serie además de tener un juego hermosísimo con los colores que resalta cada una de las características que se están retratando, se ve también la esencia del trabajo de von Holleben: el juego, la diversión y esas infinitas posibilidades que se tienen en la vida cuando uno es niño, todo cerrado en un sobre de belleza que obliga al espectador a quedarse mirando y devolverse a su niñez.

Existen muchísimas series de fotos de este talentosísimo fotógrafo, pero hay otra en particular que me parece genial, porque a pesar de que los personajes son adultos, se ve que se divirtieron como niños haciendola. Esta serie se titula «Super heroes» y son básicamente personas normales que con elementos caseros se ven como mutantes, extraterrestres de dimensiones alteradas y con extensiones corporales bastante extrañas, pero…siempre divertidas y siempre llenas de color.

Por último antes de que se sumerjan en el fantástico mundo de Jan von Holleben los dejo con un textico que recibí de él y que quisiera compartirlo con ustedes porque dice mucho de la clase de persona que es y de por qué sus fotos son tan deliciosamente simples y hermosas:

If anyone ever wanted to know what childhood and having fun look like in photographs, all they had do is to discover this amazing german photographer’s work.

Von Holleben started out as a photographer at age 13 following his father’s footsteps, and because of his training as a teacher and the influence of his mother, a child therapist, he began to capture and convey children stories and the concept of game and playing, a goal that is impecably achieved with towo of his photo series:

The first one is called «Dreams of flying» and it’s a series of images that never cease to amaze me, even if I look at them a thousand times over and over, I can always manage to find some new detail, some unbelievable clever idea like representing flowers with flip flops, fairy wings with flippers, buildings with trash cans, planets with rubber balls and piramides with open books.  It is precisely this kind of things that make these images so atractive, the fact that they are so amazing in such a simple way. All of them made with things that lay around the house, without a lot of pretensions, but always achieving such an astounding effect, which is also mind blowing beautiful, but most  importantly: so much fun!

The second series is called «I am the strongest» and what it shows is just kids being «the most»….something: The richest (on candy of course), the loudest, the strongest, the hungriest, and so on. This series besides showing a wonderful use of color that emphasizes each of the photographed qualities, also shows what I think is the essence of von Holleben’s work: game, fun and those infinite possibilities that we had in life when we were children, all wrapped up in an envelope of gorgeusness that forces the viewer to stare at these pictures and travel back to the days of childhood.

There are a lot of photo series by this talented photographer, but there is a third one that I find extremely cool because even if the characters are adults, it looks like they had «child like» fun shooting this. It’s called «Superheroes» and the shots are basically regular people, who with home found elements turn theirselves into some kind of mutants, or superheroes with altered dimensions and pretty weird body extensions that are always fun to look at and filled with strong colors.

Last but not least, before you plunge into the fantastic world of Jan von Holleben, I leave you with a short but lovely statement he sent me, and that I want to share with you because once you read it you will understand the kind of person he is, and why his pictures are so deliciously simple and beautiful:

Casi todas las cosas bonitas e interesantes del mundo son hechas con amor, con afecto, con pasión o con todos estos mezclados….por eso no fue una sorpresa para mí cuando le pedí a Monica que escribiera un pequeño texto sobre sus ilustraciones para Picnic, y recibí en mi email esto:

«Las imagenes para mi son como un modo de querer..es como darle un abrazo a algo que normalmente no se le puede dar (a un gesto, a un extraño, a un lugar, a una situación), o de prolongar ese «no se que» que tienen ciertas cosas en determinados momentos. Dibujar da mas tiempo para contemplar (que a veces la rapidez con que vivimos no permite) y deja casi que tocar lo que se ve…es un acto muy afectivo, y por eso es que creo que dibujar da felicidad. Es como un proceso muy bonito y tranquilo de digerir la propia vida, todo lo que en ella va apareciendo o sucediendo, de una manera además muy íntima y afectiva.»

Pues Monica entonces va por el mundo abrazando y contemplando por largo tiempo todo tipo de sujetos: amigos, personajes anónimos en el tren, señores en la ciudad acompañados de una niebla que de alguna forma es visible/invisible, animales, objetos olvidados, paisajes, edificios, y mi favorito: un chico que viaja en el tren leyendo, del que Monica dice que confía en él sólo por la forma en que sostiene su libro. Todos marcados sutilmente por las herramientas y  las técnicas que los hacen inconfundiblemente de ella, los fondos color pasteles, los tonos de grises, las texturas delicadas y los pequeños textos que acompañan estos pedazos de su vida y que dejan entrever una persona con una sensibilidad sobrecogedora y un talento inmenso.

Creo que no se debe decir mucho más del talento de esta increíble chica, que además de ilustraciones hace hermosísimas fotos para el que quiera curiosear, los dejo entonces con un consejito que ella misma da: «definitivamente lo más importante de todo este cuento es estar realmente conectado a lo que hacemos..trabajar a partir de motivaciones muy propias, cosas que de verdad nos toquen por quién sabe que razón, y si ya despues los resultados le gustan a otros tambien mucho mejor, porque se comparte. :)»

Almost every beautyful or interesting thing that one comes across in life comes from love, or affection, or passion, or all of these mixed together….that’s why I wasn’t surprised when I asked Monica to write a short text about her illustrations for  Picnic and recieved this on my email:

«Images for me are like a way of loving….they are like giving a hug to something to which you can’t normally give one (a gesture, a stranger, a place, a situation), or a way to prolong that unknown feeling that certain things have in certain moments. Drawing allows me to take more time to contemplate things (which is often not possible at the speed we live in) and almost allows me to touch what I see…it’s a very affective action, and that is why I believe that drawing brings happiness. It’s a very beautyful and peaceful process of digesting your own life and all the stuff that happens or shows up in it, in a very intimate and affectionate way.»

So, Monica lives her life hugging and contemplating all kinds of subjects: friends, anonimous characters in the train, men in cities with a fog for background that is somehow visible/invisible, animals, forgotten objects, landscapes, buildings, and my personal favorite: a guy reading in a train whom Monica says she trusts «just by the way he holds his book». All of them  subtly branded by the tools and techniques which make them unmistakable her own: pastel colour backgrounds, gray tones, delicate textures and tiny texts that explain these pieces of her life and that allow us to make out a person with an ovewhelming sensibility and an enormous talent.

I think there’s no need to say anything else about this incredible girl, who also takes amazing pictures if any of you guys wants to browse through her flickr. I leave you then with a tiny piece of advice she wrote: «the most important thing in this trade is to be really conected to what we do…to work from motivations that come from deep within us, stuff that really touches us for who knows what reason. And if after that other people like the results, then it’s even better because we get to share it. :)»

Ha sido una semana un poco demente, entre la cantidad de trabajo, las compras navideñas, dos invitados que por motivos de fuerza mayor no alcanzaban a mandarme la info (quedan pendientes para el 2009) y el hecho de que nos tuvimos que ir de nuestro apartamento por una invasión descontrolada de hongos, no quedó mucho tiempo para pensar en un plan de contingencia para picnic.
Así que he decidido tomarme una licencia, por temporada navideña y de mudanza, los voy a dejar descansar de mí hasta el 15 de enero de 2009!
Feliz navidad para todos, feliz año, felices reyes, feliz hannukah, feliz festivus, lo que sea que celebren….que sea feliz!

It’s been an insane week, between the amount of work, holiday shopping, two picnic guests who unfotunately were unable to send the infomation due to awful timing, and the fact that we had to leave our apartment and get a new one in less than a week because of a major fungus invasion, there just wasn’t enough time left to come up with a contingency plan for picnic.
So I’ve decided to take a «Christmas/Moving month leave», so you people can have a little rest from me until January 15th,2009.
Merry christmas, happy new year, happy hannukah, happy festivus, whatever it is that you celebrate, just make sure it’s…happy!

Del Sr. Bucher se pueden decir muchas cosas buenas: que ha diseñado libros para David Hockney, que ha trabajado haciendo las carátulas de discos de artistas como Sting o Whitney Houston, que se ganó un «Lapiz amarillo» en Inglaterra como reconocimiento por el diseño del libro «American Photography 17», que es el creador del genial estudio de diseño gráfico 344 design….Muchas muchas cosas buenas, pero personalmente lo mejor que puedo decir de él es: es la persona que mejor sabe hacer uso de una mancha de tinta china.

Hace un par de años, por recomendación de mi hermano di con un blog que se llama dailymonster.com , recuerdo que cuando mi hermano me mandó el email recomendandolo, el asunto decía: «ESTO SI ES UN BLOG», y efectivamente, si que lo es! esta página resulto ser un lugar que para mí se volvió de visita obligada diariamente, resultó ser un lugar lleno de gente con muchas cosas para contar alrededor de….precisamente, una mancha de tinta china, que después de ser intervenida por Stefan se convertía en un increíble monstruo.

El proyecto es asi: todos los días, durante 200 días consecutivos, Stefan Bucher subió a su página un video como este en el que mostraba cómo a partir de una mancha de tinta, creaba un personaje de características, digamos: «monstruales». Pero lo bueno no termina ahí, junto con el video, había una invitación (siempre terminada con la frase «remember 344 loves you…») para que cualquier persona posteara una historia relacionada con la monstruosa creación del día.

Obviamente, el éxito no se hizo esperar, el proyecto resultó en 200 geniales personajes con miles de historias para contar, algunas tristes, otras felices, otras desconcertantes, otras bizarras…en fín, podría jurar que pasé muchas muchísimas horas frente a la pantalla del compu leyendo las historias y mirando y re mirando los personajes.

El año pasado el proyecto dio un paso más y fue publicado el libro «100 days of monsters» que es una recopilación de algunas de las historias, con un DVD con todos los videos de los primeros 100 amigos que Stefan creó para nosotros los internautas. Asi que ahora, celebrando el invitado número 10 de Picnic, se los comparto por aqui a todos ustedes, porque al final de cuentas esa es la idea de este blog: que disfruten tanto como yo con descubrimientos como estos que aunque ya tienen años de descubiertos, aún me siguen sorprendiendo y enganchando.

y recuerden…344 los quiere!

A lot of good things can be said about Mr. Bucher: That he has designed books for David Hockney, that he has worked on album covers for artists like Sting, or Whitney Houston, that the British Design & Art Direction honored him with a Yellow Pencil for “Most Outstanding Complete Book Design” for his design of the five-and-a-half pound American Photography 17 annual, that he’s the creator of the great 344 Design Studio…yes, A LOT of good things, but the best thing I can say about him is: the man sure knows how to make good use out of an ink blotch.

A couple of years ago, following my brother’s recommmendation, I discovered a blog called dailymonster.com, I remember that the email in which my brother sent the link to me had the subject text: «NOW THIS IS A BLOG!!!», and just like he said, IT WAS! this link turned out to be a place of mandatory daily visit for me, it turned out to be a place filled with people with amazing stories to tell, all of them regarding….precisely the infamous ink blotch, that once manipulated by Stefan, turned itself into an unbelievable monster.

The whole idea of the project is something like this: Each day, for 200 days, Stefan Bucher uploaded a video in which he showed how he created a character of «monstrous» features from an ink blotch. But it doesn’t end here, along with the video came an invitation (that always ended with the charming phrase: «Remember…344 loves you» ) for people to upload any story they could think of about the day’s monstrous creation.

Obviously, success came along fast enough, and the project gave birth to 200 great characters with hundreds of stories to tell, some of them sad, some of them happy, some of them unsettling and some of them bizarre. I could personally swear that I spent a reeeeeally LARGE amount of hours sitting in front of my screen, just pouring over the stories and watching and re watching the enigmatic characters that inspired them.

Last year, the project was taken one step further when the book «100 days of monsters» was launched. This little delicious treasure has a DVD with the videos of the first 100 monsters, and also includes a recopilation of some of the stories written about them.

So now as a celebration for Picnic’s guest NUMBER 10, I’m sharing this treasure with you, because that’s the whole point of making this blog: to ensure that you guys have as much fun as I do with findings such as this one, that even after a couple of years, never ceases to amaze and entertain me.

Cuando uno se pone a mirar el trabajo de Cata, lo primero y más evidente que se viene a la cabeza, que creo que se lo han dicho docenas de veces es: que mujer, que feminista, que frágil…varios adjetivos de esta misma línea se pueden utilizar para describir sus fotos, pero a pesar de acercarse, no logran describirlas completamente. Creo que para lograr ésto habría que conocer un poco más del proceso por el que pasan las ideas para ser convertidas en imágenes.

Yo tuve la suerte de conocer a la persona detrás de la cámara, de vivir sus procesos, sus «orgasmos creativos» como ella los llama, me tocó presenciar y reirme de varios de estos episodios que básicamente consisten en un torrente de ideas y palabras sin sentido que van saliendo de su cabeza, puliéndose y mutando minuto tras minuto, de una forma tan cambiante que es imposible seguirle el paso, y como resultado: el pobre espectador (en este caso, yo) queda completamente arrollado por la cantidad de información y sin entender nada de lo que esta chica quiere conseguir!

Todo este atropello de conceptos y palabras que sólo ella puede enteder, se ve clarificado cuando días, horas o inclusive minutos después, se descubre el impecable resultado: sus imágenes…sus mujeres..sus personajes..sus críticas y temáticas sociales…sus caras…su ausencia de caras…sus encuadres abiertos…sus autoretratos. De alguna forma todos estos retratos creados a partir de caos y mucha, muchísima pásión, simplemente…funcionan, formando composiciones tan armónicas, que es imposible pensarlas de otra forma, imposible imaginarlas distintas.

Hay que decir que todas estas imágenes son pequeños fragmentos de la persona que está detrás de la cámara, cada una deja asomar un pedacito de su alma, y creo que precisamente eso es lo que las hace tan especiales y tan únicas, el hecho de que Cata ponga en cada una de ellas un pequeño pedacito suyo, nos deje ver un poquito, nos comparta un poquito de su luz, justo la cantidad exacta para querer ver siempre un poco más y un poco más. Con la enorme suerte de que el alma de Cata es tan inmensa, que creo que nunca se va a quedar sin tema para sus imágenes.

Así que aqui los dejo con las chicas de esta chica, a quien tengo la suerte de llamar mi amiga, mi gran amiga, la fotógrafa.

As you look through Cata’s work, the first and most evident thing that pops into one’s head, and that I think she must have heard this a hundred times is: such a woman, such a feminist, such fragility…and a couple of adjectives in the same line can be used to describe her photos, but even though these words approach the idea of her work they don’t quite describe it accurately. In order to achieve such a description it’s necessary to dig a little deeper, to get to know the process the ideas go through to turn themselves into images.

I was lucky enough to have the opportunity of knowing the person behind the camera, to experience her processes, her «creative orgasms» as she likes to call them, I was witness and laughed at many of these episodes that basically are a huge overflow of ideas and senseless words that stream out of her head at a thousand miles per hour while continually changing in a way that it’s impossible to keep track, and as a result the poor inocent spectator (in this case, me) ends up completely over runned by the amount of information, and understanding nothing of what this girl wants to convey.

All this mass of concepts and words, that only she’s able to process and understand, is suddenly clarified as days, hours or even minutes after the episode, one discovers the impecable result: her images…her women…her characters…he criticisms and social themes…her faces…her absence of faces…her open frames..her selfportraits. Somehow all of these portraits created from chaos and a LOT of passion seem to just…..work, turning themselves into such armonic compositions, that it’s impossible to imagine them any other way, impossible to imagine them different.

It must be said that all of these images are small fragments of the person behind the camera, each one shows just a tiny bit of her soul, and I guess that’s precissely what makes them so unique and special, the fact that Cata places a little piece of herself in each one of them, that she allows us to see a little bit of her, that she shares a tiny part of her light with us, just the exact amount to leave us wanting for more. Luckily for us, her soul is so enormous that I’m guessing she’ll never find herself without a subject or an idea for her pictures.

So here I leave with this lovely girl’s girls, a person I’m lucky enough to call a friend, my great friend, the photographer.

Con todas las excentricidades de la moda, muy pocos personajes logran lucirla como se merece, mezclando todas las tendencias de las diferentes temporadas, manteniéndose a la vanguardia y armando conjuntos que sólo se ven en las pasarelas.

Uno de estos personajes es nuestra invitada, que aunque no sea real, no importa mucho, igual es adorada y comentada por todas las personas que la conocen, y no podíamos ser la excepción, asi que para esta quincena Picnic se enorgullece en presentar a la fashionista #1: Fifi Lapin.

Fifi es una conejita aficionada casi hasta el punto de patología a la moda, heredera de una gran fortuna de su padre que trabaja en el mercado de acciones de zanahorias, Fifi cuenta su historia: «Hola soy Fifi. Fifi Lapin. Nací en una camada de 257 hermanos, pero tristemente cuando cumplimos un año hubo una epidemia de Mixomatosis de la que yo fui la única sobreviviente. Debido a ésto mis padres son increiblemente sobreprotectores y me consienten hasta dañarme. Soy la heredera de la fortuna de mi padre que creció cuantiosamente gracias a inversiones en el mercado de acciones de zanahorias y lechugas. Algunas personas piensan que soy una socialite pero creo que hay más de mi que ropa con estilo!»

Fuimos afortunados de conseguir a Fifi justo en el punto en que está ahora, casi volviéndose una celebridad, sus conjuntos se pueden encontrar en muchos blogs alrededor de la web, algunos tan leídos como Oh Joy!, y en revistas tan importantes como Vogue y Teen Vogue en donde dijeron de ella; «Si el mundo de la moda es una selva de prendas, la conejita con estilo Fifi Lapin reina con orgullo.»

Personalmente no se si Fifi sea una socialite, o si sea la reina de la selva de la moda, pero me parece que algo que agrupe moda, ilustraciones y conejitos en un sólo ítem no puede tener muchos lados negativos, o si? Asi que para los que están familiarizados con las pasarelas, aquí les queda una galería llena de conjuntos de sus diseñadores preferidos llevados como solo la Srta. Lapin los sabe llevar, y para los que no, siempre es bueno ver a los grandes diseñadores y más cuando los luce una genial modelo!

Excentric as the fashion industry is, very few characters manage to pull it off as it should be, mixing every single trend in each changing season, keeping up to date and pulling off ensambles that one can only picture in runway shows.

One of such characters is our guest, who, despite being a «non real» character, is worshiped and talked about by all the people who come across her, and because we at Picnic didn’t want to be left behind, here she is, we’re proud to bring you the number one fashionista: Fifi Lapin.

Fifi is a bunny who looooves fashion almost to a pathologic point, she’s the hare-ess of her father’s huge fortune, and she spends most of it in fancy and gorgeus clothing, in her own words: «Hi, I’m Fifi. Fifi Lapin. I was born one of 257 brothers and sisters but sadly there was an outbreak of myxamatosis when I was one year old and I was the only one that survived. My parents are therefore incredibly protective of me and spoil me rotten. I’m an hare-ess to my fathers fortune which he made playing fast and loose with carrot and lettuce shares on the international stock market. There are a lot of rabbits out there so I guess he just struck gold (or orange you might say). Some people think I’m just a socialite but I think there is more to me than just an extremely stylish clotheshorse!»

We were lucky enough to catch Fifi in her current «almost celebrity» state, since you can find her ensambles reviewed in many blogs on the web, some as big and popular as Oh Joy, and also in big publications such as Vogue and Teen Vogue, in which was written about her: «If the fashion world is a sartorial jungle, then style bunny Fifi Lapin rules the pride!»

I personally couldn’t tell if Fifi is a socialite, or if she’s the uncrowned queen of the fashion jungle, but I do know that someone that brings fashion, illustration and bunnies in a single item has won me over completely, wouldn’t you love her too? So, for those of you that are familiar with runway shows, here’s a gallery filled with ensambles of your favorite designers, worn as only the glamorous Ms. Lapin knows how, and, for those of you who are not familiar with the fashion worldm it’s always good to take a look at great clothing worn by such a great model!

Cuando Juampi Bonino dice que sus fotos de moda se inspiran en las bandas de rock no está mintiendo, con sólo darle una ojeada a su trabajo de moda para revistas como Dirrty Glam (Francia) y La Fuga (Argentina) se siente uno transportado a los gloriosos años 60’s y 70’s del Rock, como metido en un set de la película Almost Famous.

Pienso que lo que hace que las fotos de Jaumpi sean tan especiales es precisamente que tienen por detrás conceptos muy fuertes que se ven impecablemente plasmados a través de su lente, y no es que el chico se ponga con cosas sencillas, noooo señor, ha hecho editoriales de moda basados en conceptos tan complejos como las ilustraciones de Mark Ryden, la película Gummo y canciones de Lou Reed, todos estos temas siempre con su buena carga de Rock and Roll y mucha rebeldía que transmiten como un sentimientito de que uno puede quedarse joven para siempre, siempre idealista, en lugares en donde siempre es verano, o al menos siempre hay una hermosa luz natural que hace ver todo como un atardecer tranquilo, sin muchas preocupaciones. Todo esto, hay que decirlo, puesto en escena con su increíble novia Fab Silberstein que es la encargada de la producción, completando un dream team que ya lo quisiera yo para mí!

Cuando le pregunté al señor Bonino qué quisiera de sus fotos, me contestó: «me interesa que mis fotos tengan algo para decir, que las personas que las miren se queden con un mensaje, que quieran copiarme, que mis fotos sigan un guion como el de una buena pelicula y si no tienen guion que sean tan espontaneas, simples y geniales como una peli del Dogma 95.» Y tengo que decir, que ganas no me faltan de copiarlo, porque las fotos de Juampi se ven ahora a sus veinti tantos años, como yo quisiera que se vean mis fotos «cuando sea grande».

Juampi Bonino is not lying when he says his shots are inspired by Rock n roll bands, with just a glance at his fashion editorial work for magazines like Dirrty Glam (France) and La Fuga (Argentina) a person can time travel to the glorious 60’s and 70’s when Rock and roll was king. It’s Just like jumping into an «Almost Famous» movie set.

I really think that what makes Juampi’s pictures so special is the fact that they are backed by a solid and strong concept that is always impecably delivered through his lense. And we’re not precisely talking about easy stuff here, nooooo sir, he’s done fashion editorials based in such complex stuff as the movie Gummo, Mark Ryden’s illustrations and Lou Reed’s songs, all of them always filled with a truck load of Rock and roll and lots of rebelliousness that kind of give you the feeling that a person can stay young forever, forever idealistic in places where it’s always summer, or at least places where there’s always some gorgeous natural light that makes the world seem like an eternal sunset free of all worries. All of this is neatly achieved with the help of his amazing girlfriend Fab Silberstein who is always in charge of the styling, completing a dream team that I wish I had for myself.

When I asked Mr. Bonino what he expects of his pics, he answered: «What interests me is that my pictures have something to say, that people look at them and get the message, that they wish to copy what I do, that my pictures follow a script like that of a good movie, and if they don’t have a script, that they are as spontaneous, simple and great as a Dogma 95 movie». And I have to say that I can hardly repress my urge to copy what he does, because Juampi’s pictures now when he’s twenty something years old, kind of look like what I would like my photos to look «when I grow up».

Hay veces que uno se encuentra por ahí con imágenes que lo dejan sin aliento, sin saber muy bien por qué, le mueven a uno como algo por dentro que hacen que uno se pare y se quede, y se quede, y se quede…lo más bonito es cuando uno encuentra que detrás de las imágenes existen personas igualmente fascinantes…

Hace poco leí por ahí en un comentario de flickr esta frase de Holden Caulfield sobre los libros: “Los que de verdad me gustan son esos que cuando acabas de leerlos piensas que ojalá el autor fuera muy amigo tuyo para poder llamarle por teléfono cuando quisieras”. Bueno pues eso fue exactamente lo que yo hice con este personaje, no lo llamé por teléfono, pero nos conectamos por msn, y pasamos mucho rato conversando de toda clase de estupideces, y fue muy muy bonito descubrir que la persona detrás de las imágenes era casi tan, o más interesante que ellas. El tipo de persona que cuando se despide dice «buenas noches, que sueñes con gomitas», o que sus trabajos de los sueños cuando era chiquito eran: ser diseñador de aviones o escritor de novelas de terror, o el tipo de persona que reconoce que se inició en la fotografía por voyeurista, para poder espiar a las chicas del edificio del frente con la cámara de su hermana, valiéndose de su poderoso zoom.

Luis afirma con seguridad que es un retratista, y creo que todos los que hemos visto su trabajo estamos totalmente de acuerdo, no me lo puedo imaginar por la calle persiguiendo alguna noticia, cazando algún instante decisivo, no, sus fotos toman tiempo, toman escenificación, toman todo un proceso de aterrizaje del insospechado mundo de su cabeza, son, verdaderamente: trabajos.

Trabajos que son mucho mejor explicado con sus propias palabras: «Siempre negué mi sensibilidad artística; la asesiné desde que era un adolescente, la asesiné y la enterré en algún lugar de mi ser; después de eso pasaron años en los que me desempeñé como cineasta y filmé films y series de tv como director de fotografía, pero hace poco toqué fondo y sentí que estaba incompleto, volví a ver a esa persona creativa allí moribunda y le di una mano, de repente estaba cara a cara con esa parte de mi que había negado y ahora pienso darle un pasaporte para que salga y explore, para que tome el control, de lo contrario me declararé simplemente muerto en vida.

Pienso que parte de esa nostalgia contenida en esos años anteriores aparece en mis imágenes, creo que mi lugar esta en el retrato, por que de alguna manera he logrado conectar con personas conocidas o desconocidas en planos íntimos de su ser. Adoro las imágenes con un mensaje latente pero no del todo claro, sin una pose preestablecida, adoro entrar en los ojos de un desconocido y sentir por un instante que compartes un sentimiento; estamos solos? Lo voy a lograr? Tiene sentido todo esto? La pasas tan bien como yo?»

Bienvenidos entonces, damas y caballeros picniqueros al mundo de Luis Otero, al reflejo de sus sueños, al interior de su mente, a sus personajes inquietantes y sus colores imposibles; se les recuerda no sacar las manos del carrito ni tomar fotografías con flash.

There are times in life when you find images that simply take your breath away, and you don’t quite know why, they move stuff inside you and make you stop and stare, and stare….and stare. The best , though, is when you discover that behind such images there’s a person as fascinating as his work.

A while ago I read a brilliant comment in someone’s flickr stream, it was a Holden Caulfield quote about books, and it said: «The ones I really like arer those that when you’re done reading them make you think: I wish the author was a good friend of mine so I could call him on the phone any time». Well that was exactly what I did with Mr Otero, I didn’t call him on the phone, but we contacted each other through msn and we spent looong hours talking about all kinds of stuff, and it was really beautiful to discover that the person behind the images was just as interestinh, or even more, than them. He’s the kind of persons that says good night by saying «good night, have gummi bear filled dreams», or the kind of person whose dream jobs as a child were: plane designer or horror novel writer. The kind of person that admits to have started out in photography because he wanted to check out the girls on the building across the street with his sister’s powerful zoom lens.

Luis says that he’s most certainly a portrait maker, and I think that anyone who knows he’s work would agree, I can’t posibly imagine him running down the street chasing some piece of news, or hunting the long wanted «decisive instant», no, his pictures take time, take staging, take a process of landing his unknow world into ours, they are truly, WORKS.

Works that are much better explained in his own words: «I always denied my artistic sensitivity; I murdered it when I was a teenager; I murdered it and buried it somewhere deep inside myself; after that years went by and I worked as a film maker, as a director of photography for films and tv, but a little time ago I touched bottom and felt that I was incomplete, I saw that creative dying person and gave him a hand and all of a sudden I was face to face with that part of me that I had constantly denied. And now I want to give him a passport to come out and explore the world, to take control, otherwise I will declare myself as just a living dead.

I think that part of the nostalgia from all those lost years is shown in my images, I think I’ve found my place in portraiture, because somehow I’ve managed to conect with both people who are known to me and with strangers at a very intimate level of their being. I love images that have a message that is there but not entirely clear, those that don’t have a preestablished pose. I love to enter the eyes of a stranger and for an instant feel that you share a feeling: Are we alone? Am I going to make it? Does it all make sense? Are you having as good a time as I am?»

So welcome my picnicker ladies and gentlemen to the world of Luis Otero, to the reflections of his dreams, to the interior of his mind, to his unsettling characters and his impossible colors. You are reminded to keep your hands in the vehicle at all times and not to take flash photographs.

Art and Ghosts es el nombre que utiliza Louise para referirse a su increíble proyecto de ilustración y collage digital que empezó hace tres años después de que dejó sus estudios de artes plásticas por problemas económicos y por la tentación de lanzarse como ilustradora independiente. Y creo que cuando se tiene un talento y una visión de este tamaño, poco es lo que pueden hacer los estudios que no pueda hacer uno mismo estimulando el ojo y la creatividad continuamente, y precisamente, esto es lo que pasa con Louise que parece encontrar una inagotable fuente de inspiración en todas las cosas que la rodean, como ella misma dice: » Mis influencias incluyen un profundo amor por los cuentos de hadas, el floklore y la mitología. Me interesa muchísimo como estos temas atemporales se mantienen presentes y relevantes en el día a día de la vida contemporánea. También me gusta mucho la música y la narrativa, por lo que cada trabajo finalmente contiene su propia «pequeña historia».  A veces me gusta pensar en mis trabajos como «ficciones silenciosas», pequeñas narrativas que no tienen fronteras claras o desenlaces a la vista- lo que espero que anime al espectador a crear sus propias conclusiones personales sobre el trabajo. «

¡Y que «pequeñas narrativas»! yo me puse a mirar su galería de 540 imágenes y debo haber favoriteado por lo menos 490, si no fueron más, cada imágen que iba pasando era más hermosa que la otra, y no sólo por la parte estética o por el mérito como ilustración o collage, sino por los temas y los títulos, por la forma en que ella logra mezclar varios temas, personajes y situaciones en una imagen , elementos que aparentemente no tienen niguna relación pero que en estas imágenes forman una armonía contundente que acompañada de una escala de tonalidades pasteles hace que el espectador se quede hipnotizado, mirando los enormes ojos de sus protagonistas, los intrincados peinados, los detalles en colores fuertes como los zapatitos, los gorros y otros que se encuentran sabiamente posicionados en todo el trabajo de Louise.

Asi que aqui los dejo con el arte y los fantasmas de Louise, con sus mundos de ensueño, sus personajes intrigantes que parecen los hijos perdidos de Mark Ryden y Loretta Lux, sus lugares pasteles en los que personalmente me gustaría encontrarme algún día al despertarme de un sueño.

Art and Ghosts is how Louise named her incredible digital illustration and collage project which started three years ago after she quit her fine arts studies due to financial difficulties, and the temptation to try making a go of it alone. I really believe that when you have this ammount of talent and vision, there’s very little that studying can do that can not be done by one self by constantly stimulating your eye and creativity, and I think that this is precisely Louise’s case becasuse she seems to find endless inspiration in everything around her, as she herself puts it: «My influences involve a deep love of fairytales, folklore and mythology. I have a keen interest in how these timeless themes are still so present, so relevant in everyday, contemporary life. I am also quite driven by music and narrative, so that each work ultimately contains its own little ‘story’ so to speak. I sometimes like to think of them as ‘silent fictions’; little narratives that have no clear boundaries or resolutions in sight – which i hope encourages the viewer to come to their own, personal conclusions about the work.»

And what «little narratives» they are! I was looking through her stream of 540 images on Flickr and I must have faved at least 490 if not more. Each image that I opened was more stunning than the other, and not just because of the beauty in them or for the illustrative and collage merit, but also for the topics and the titles she uses and for the way in which she manages to mix topics, situations and characters in one image. These elements seem to have nothing in common but in these images they create an astounding armony, that along with a pastel tone scale, makes the viewer hipnotized as he stares into the huge eyes of the characters, their intricate hair stylings, the details in strong colors as tiny red shoes, hats, and others, that are wisely placed all through Louise’s work.

So here I leave you with Louise’s art and ghosts, with their dream like worlds, their intriguing characters that kind of look like the lost children of Mark Ryden and Loretta Lux, their pastel locations on which I would personally would like to find myself someday after waking up from a long dream.
